Who was Queen Elizabeth II?

Queen Elizabeth II (April 21, 1926 – September 8, 2022) was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and a globally respected symbol of stability, duty, and tradition. Born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor in London, she was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Her life changed dramatically in 1936 when her uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated, making her father king and placing her next in line to the throne.

Elizabeth became queen on February 6, 1952, following her father’s death. Her coronation in 1953 marked the beginning of a 70-year reign that witnessed immense social, political, and technological change. She served as head of state through the administrations of 15 British Prime Ministers and during major global events, including the Cold War, the rise of the European Union, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Known for her unwavering commitment to public service, Queen Elizabeth II carried out thousands of official duties, both at home and across the Commonwealth. Her reign included landmark jubilees, state visits, and a historic sense of continuity amid change.

In her personal life, she married Prince Philip in 1947 and had four children: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. Despite challenges within the royal family, she remained a widely admired figure worldwide.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral Castle in Scotland at the age of 96. Her legacy as a dedicated monarch and unifying presence endures in British history and global memory.
